These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of our plagiarism detection, AI-content detection, document scanning and related services (together, the “Services”).
By creating an account, purchasing credits or using the Services, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy.
If you do not agree to these Terms, you should not use the Services.
We may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes to the Services, our business practices or applicable law. The current version will always be published on this page. Where a change is material, we will take reasonable steps to bring it to the attention of affected users.
1. Accounts and eligibility
Some features of the Services require you to create an account.
You must provide accurate information when registering and keep your account details reasonably up to date. You are responsible for keeping your password and other account credentials secure.
Please contact us promptly if you believe somebody else has accessed or used your account without permission.
Users under 18 should use the Services only with appropriate permission or supervision from a parent, guardian, school, college or other responsible adult or organisation. A person making a purchase must be legally capable of entering into that purchase.
Uploaded documents and completed scan reports are available through authenticated user accounts. They are not published publicly and are not displayed alongside advertising.
2. Using the Services
We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Services for personal, educational or internal business purposes.
You must not:
- resell or sublicense access to the Services without our written permission;
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Services or another user’s account;
- interfere with, damage or overload the website, API connections or other technical systems used to provide the Services;
- reverse engineer or attempt to extract proprietary software or source code except where the law expressly permits this;
- use the Services for unlawful purposes; or
- use automated systems to abuse the Services or circumvent limits, security controls or payment requirements.
3. Credits and pricing
The Services operate on a credit-based, pay-as-you-go system.
One credit covers up to 250 words. A document containing 1–250 words uses one credit, 251 – 500 words uses two credits, and so on.
A standard credit can include both plagiarism detection and AI-content detection as part of the same scan. Certain optional or additional features may require extra credits. Where this applies, the required number of credits will be shown before you start the scan.
Credit bundles are available at the prices shown on our Pricing page. Larger bundles may offer a lower price per credit.
Purchased credits are stored in your account and do not expire.
The exact credit cost of a scan is calculated before the scan begins. Credits are not deducted merely because you upload a document for a cost calculation.
Payments are processed by our third-party payment provider, Stripe. We do not receive or store your full payment-card details.
Prices may change from time to time, but a change will not alter the number of credits already held in your account.
4. Cancellations and refunds
IIf you are a consumer, you may have statutory cancellation, refund or other rights under applicable consumer law. Nothing in these Terms restricts those rights.
Voluntary refunds of unused credits
In addition to your statutory rights, we offer a voluntary refund facility for unused credits.
Requests for a voluntary refund must be made within 21 days of the date on which the relevant credit bundle was purchased.
After 21 days, unused credits will remain available in your account and will not expire, but they will no longer be eligible for a voluntary cash refund unless we agree otherwise or a refund is required by law.
If you have used part of a credit bundle within the 21-day period, you may request a refund of the unused balance. We will recalculate the credits already used at the price that would have applied to the quantity actually used at the time of purchase and deduct that amount from the price originally paid.
For example, if you purchase a 20-credit bundle but use 10 credits before requesting a refund, the 10 credits used may be recalculated at the applicable 10-credit bundle rate, with the remaining balance refunded.
We do not offer voluntary cash refunds where the amount refundable under this policy would be less than £5. After 21 days, or where the refundable amount is below £5, unused credits remain available in your account and do not expire. These restrictions apply only to our voluntary refund policy and do not affect any refund or other remedy to which you are entitled by law.
Credits used for scans
Credits used for a scan are regarded as consumed once the scan has been started and are not normally refundable simply because you are dissatisfied with, disagree with or do not wish to use the resulting report.
If a scan fails because of a technical fault for which we are responsible, we may restore the affected credits to your account or provide another appropriate remedy.
This does not affect any statutory rights or remedies you may have where the Services have not been provided in accordance with applicable consumer law.
Statutory rights
Our voluntary 21-day refund policy is separate from any statutory cancellation, refund or other consumer rights that apply to your purchase.
Nothing in this section limits or excludes any right that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.
5. Scans and results
PlagPointer provides automated plagiarism and AI-content analysis.
Although the technology used by the Services is designed to achieve a high level of accuracy, no automated detection system can guarantee that every result will be correct or complete.
A plagiarism or similarity result identifies content which matches or resembles material found elsewhere. A match does not, by itself, establish that plagiarism has occurred.
Likewise, an AI-detection result is an analytical indicator. It should not be treated as conclusive proof that a particular person did or did not use generative AI.
Results should be considered in context and, particularly where they may lead to academic, employment, disciplinary or other significant consequences, alongside appropriate human review and other available evidence.
Processing may take several minutes or longer depending on the document, scan settings, demand and third-party processing systems. You do not need to keep the processing page open. Completed reports are made available through My scans in your account.
6. Your documents and intellectual property
You retain ownership of any copyright and other intellectual property rights you have in documents submitted to the Services.
By submitting a document, you give us and the service providers acting on our behalf the limited rights necessary to receive, transmit, process, analyse and temporarily store the document for the purpose of providing the Services to you.
You must ensure that you are entitled to submit the document and its contents for processing.
If a document contains somebody else’s personal information, confidential information or copyright material, you are responsible for ensuring that you have an appropriate right or lawful basis to submit it.
Submitting a document does not transfer ownership of that document to PlagPointer.
7. Shared comparison database
Plagiarism scanning can optionally use a shared database of previously submitted documents as an additional source of comparison.
If you choose to add your document to the shared comparison database, the submitted content may be indexed so that future scans can identify similarities with it.
This option is voluntary.
If you do not choose the shared database option, your document will not be added to that database for future plagiarism comparison.
This is separate from the temporary processing and retention that may be necessary for a document to be scanned and a report to be produced.
You may ask us to remove a document that you previously chose to add to the shared comparison database. There is no charge for making this request.
The underlying API expressly distinguishes ordinary scan storage from indexing into its comparison database, and supports permanent purge of indexed material.
8. Privacy
Our collection and use of personal information is explained in our Privacy Policy.
Documents must be transmitted to specialist service providers in order to perform plagiarism and AI-content analysis.
Documents that are not added to the shared comparison database may nevertheless be stored temporarily as part of the ordinary technical processing required to perform a scan, return results and operate the Services.
We do not provide uploaded documents or scan reports to advertising partners for advertising purposes.
9. Our intellectual property
Except for content submitted by users, the website, branding, software, design, text, graphics and other materials forming part of the Services are owned by or licensed to PlagPointer and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws.
Nothing in these Terms transfers ownership of those rights to you.
You may not reproduce, distribute or commercially exploit our proprietary materials except with our permission or where permitted by law.
10. Third-party services
We use third-party service providers to operate parts of the Services, including plagiarism and AI-content analysis, hosting, payment processing, email delivery and technical infrastructure.
Temporary interruption, delay or failure of one of those systems may affect the availability or speed of the Services.
We will use reasonable care in providing the Services, but cannot guarantee that every third-party system will be continuously available or error-free.
We may change service providers from time to time where reasonably necessary to operate or improve the Services.
11. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or restrict access to an account where reasonably necessary to:
- protect the security or integrity of the Services;
- investigate suspected fraud or misuse;
- comply with a legal obligation;
- prevent harm to other users or third parties; or
- respond to a serious or repeated breach of these Terms.
Where reasonably practicable, we will explain the reason for a suspension.
You may stop using the Services at any time.
Termination of an account does not affect rights or obligations that arose before termination.
12. Liability
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any statutory right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted.
If you are a consumer, we are responsible for loss or damage that is a foreseeable result of our breach of these Terms or our failure to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss or damage that was not reasonably foreseeable.
We are not responsible for academic, professional, disciplinary, employment or other decisions made by third parties solely because of a scan result. Automated results should be reviewed and interpreted appropriately.
If you use the Services wholly or mainly for business purposes, we will not be liable, to the extent permitted by law, for loss of profit, revenue, business, opportunity, anticipated savings or goodwill, or for indirect or consequential business loss.
Nothing in these Terms affects any rights you have under consumer law.
13. Confidentiality and security
We treat uploaded documents and scan results as private account information.
They are not published publicly through the Services.
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures intended to protect account data, documents and scan results against unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration or loss.
No internet-based service can guarantee absolute security.

14. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by English law.
If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of any mandatory rights or protections that apply under the law of the country in which you normally live. You may also have rights to bring proceedings in courts other than those of England and Wales where consumer law permits this.
If you use the Services for business purposes, the courts of England and Wales will have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising out of or in connection with these Terms.
